SHILLONG, May 17: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Friday urged the state government to revise and fix the minimum wages of the contractual employees in various government departments.
The members of KHNAM, led by its working president Thomas Passah handed a petition in this regard to the Deputy Labour Commissioner.
In the petition, Passah reminded that the state government had constituted a sub-committee on March 6 as provided in Section 9 of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, for revising and fixing the minimum wages.
“We all have witnessed the growth in the prices of the essential commodities in the past years, which have made the common man almost impossible to make ends meet. Therefore, it is the concern of the government to ensure that the daily wages fixed will suffice the need of a common man,” Passah said.
He further emphasised an increase in the principal amount of the daily wages, taking into consideration the inflation for the next five years, and also not to rely only on the increase in Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) every six months.
