Police custody  for arsonists

SHILLONG: A local court here on Saturday awarded 10-day police custody to KSU’s Lawsohtun unit general secretary Readystone Nongrum and three others who were arrested on Friday for their alleged involvement in the Bishnupur arson case.The four persons were arrested from Nongstoin and Shillong in two different operations by police. The accused were allegedly involved in setting ablaze the owner of Babua Tea Stall, Bisheshwar Das.

Das who suffered severe burn injuries, is undergoing treatment in a Guwahati hospital.

Court relief for Umsawli residents

SHILLONG: The five families whose houses were demolished during the recent eviction drive at Umsawali got a relief after the court directed MUDA not to disturb the possession of land by them.In a recent order of the court of Assistant to Deputy Commissioner, an interim injunction was granted to the aggrieved families with an instruction that the authorities should not disturb the peaceful possession of land. The order also said that MUDA should not venture into demolition of houses in the area.

The lawyer of the petitioner, Jahanara Kharbhih said that the court also issued notices to MUDA and the State Government to respond on December 20. Kharbhih claimed that the families have valid registered documents to prove their possession of land.

It has been learnt that the MUDA is planning to file a petition before an appropriate court to vacate the injunction order of the court.

Miner’s body found

SHILLONG: Death of coal miners continues to occur in unsafe rat hole mines in the State with the latest case being reported from West Khasi Hills. According to police on Saturday, one unidentified male body(28) was recovered from a coal quarry of one Phurjen Puwein at Miangmawdar under Shallang police station in West Khasi Hills. Police suspect that the death occurred after he fell down into a gorge in the coal quarry.
