Dhubri/Dibrugarh: A grenade exploded at Chabua in Dibrugarh district and another bomb was recovered from a bus station in Dhubri district in Assam, as both factions of the ULFA observed martyr’s day on Wednesday.

A “grenade-like” substance was exploded by suspected militants of the anti-talk faction of the ULFA at Chabua College in Tinali area around 3 am, police said.

Nobody was injured in the explosion, nor any major damage was done except for shattered glass window panes of some nearby houses.

The explosive could be an Improvised Explosive Device, they said.

In another incident, a powerful bomb was defused by the police at a bus station in Lower Assam’s Dhubri town on Wednesday.

The police said if triggered, the Programmable Time Device could have caused a major disaster.

The PTD with three batteries and a switch weighing about 2.5 kg, all wrapped in a blue plastic packet was spotted by a passenger at the bus station near the Dhubri police station at around 6 am, district SP P C Saloi said.

He immediately informed the police which in turn called the Army bomb disposal squad in nearby Kokrajhar district. The bomb squad personnel promptly arrived on the scene and defused it, Saloi said. Saloi said an investigation would reveal the identity of those responsible. (PTI)
