SHILLONG, May 28: The Opposition TMC on Tuesday criticised the MDA Government for significant shortcomings in the disaster management framework and called for decisive action to fully utilise the provisions of the National Disaster Management Act 2005.
“It is high time for the MDA government to act decisively. By fully implementing the National Disaster Management Act 2005, we can ensure that our disaster response framework is robust, efficient, and capable of safeguarding both the responders and the affected populations,” said TMC leader Richard M Marak.
Marak expressed distress over the current state of disaster response efforts, while pointing out that noting that relief and rescue personnel are often forced to work without basic necessities such as raincoats. “These brave individuals are tirelessly cutting fallen trees and managing landslides under harsh conditions, highlighting their commendable dedication and resilience. However, their plight starkly reveals significant shortcomings in our disaster management framework, overseen by the MDA government,” he added.
Questioning the government, Marak said, “Why were essential protective gear and equipment not provided to the relief teams? What mechanisms are in place to ensure the timely provision of necessary tools for disaster response? How is the disaster management budget being allocated, and why are there such evident gaps in resource distribution? What steps are being taken to enhance the training and preparedness of emergency response teams to avoid such oversights in the future?”
He stressed on the need for the government to fully utilise the provisions of the National Disaster Management Act 2005, both in letter and spirit. “This comprehensive legislation was designed to create a robust framework for disaster preparedness, response, and mitigation, ensuring that adequate resources and support are provided at every level,” Marak said.
According to Marak, the current scenario demands immediate allocation of resources to ensure that all emergency response teams are equipped with the necessary protective gear, tools, and equipment to carry out their duties effectively and safely. He also called for strengthened training programs, transparent utilization of funds, and rigorous implementation of NDMA guidelines.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by these disasters. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the relief and rescue workers who, despite the challenges, continue to serve our communities with unwavering dedication,” he added.
