Workshop evaluates impact of public welfare programmes

SHILLONG, May 27: A weeklong Research Methodology Workshop launched by the Regional Centre of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), focused on ‘Impact Evaluation of Public Welfare Programs’. The event was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, who attended as the Chief Guest. Prof. B. Mishra, Head of the Department of Economics at NEHU, served as the Guest of Honour.
In his inaugural address on Monday, Prof Shukla emphasised the critical role of research in society, highlighting the necessity for research outcomes to be impact-oriented and beneficial to the broader community.
Dr Mohd. Murtaza, the workshop coordinator, introduced the programme, discussing the mechanisms, outcomes, and future directions of welfare programs that impact millions of lives across India.
The event also featured Prof Bhagirathi Panda, Professor in the Department of Economics at NEHU and Honorary Director of ICSSR-NERC, Shillong. As the programme chairperson, Prof Panda underscored Centre’s initiatives in sponsoring numerous public welfare programmes. He stressed the importance of identifying relevant attributes for evaluating these programmes, particularly in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr Rajib Sutradhar, also from the Department of Economics at NEHU. The workshop saw wide participation from scholars across the Northeastern region.
