Pakistan forces killed 504 terrorists in last five months
Peshawar, June 2: Pakistani authorities have neutralised a total of 504 terrorists in the last five months in the country’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, according to a report issued by the security agencies. The report, which is a compilation of inputs from country’s forces on the operations against the militants, said that the terrorists killed in the last five months includes important commanders of the banned outfits TTP and Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group. “The Security forces in their hot pursuit against terrorism, mowed down 504 terrorists in first five months of 2024 (January-May) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan Provinces. Important commanders of the banned outfit TTP and Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group were also killed,” said the report. (PTI)
Mexico likely to choose its first female president
Mexico City, June 2: Mexicans will likely choose the first female president in the country’s history Sunday between a former academic who promises to further the current leader’s populist policies and an ex-senator and tech entrepreneur who pledges to up the fight against deadly drug cartels. Nearly 100 million people are registered to vote in the race to replace outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Voters will also elect governors in nine of the country’s 32 states, and choose candidates for both houses of Congress, thousands of mayorships and other local posts, in the biggest elections the nation has seen and ones that have been marked by violence. First woman brigadier in Pakistan Army
Islamabad, June 2: Dr. Helen Mary Roberts, serving in the Pakistan Army Medical Corps, has made history by becoming the first woman from Christian and minority community to achieve the rank of brigadier in the country’s history. Brigadier Helen was among Pakistan Army officers promoted as brigadiers and full colonels by the Selection Board, The News reported on Sunday. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Helen on her promotion as Brigadier, saying the whole nation was proud of her and thousands of hardworking women like her from minority communities who are serving the country with distinction. 15 killed as heavy rains lash Sri Lanka
Colombo, June 2: At least 15 people were killed and more than 19,000 others from over 5,000 families were marooned over the weekend as severe monsoonal downpours inflicted widespread devastation in Sri Lanka, authorities said on Sunday. The fatalities were reported from seven districts, including Colombo, where torrential rains exceeding 300 mm have triggered flash floods, unleashed strong winds, and lightning, and caused landslides, the Disaster Management Centre said. 20 of the 25 administrative districts have been severely affected due to the rains. More than 4,000 homes have suffered partial damage, with 28 houses completely obliterated. (PTI)
