SHILLONG: The Lok Janshakti Party has asked the State Government to take steps to recognize Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the State.

Though OBCs were given reservation in Meghalaya till 2004, the State Government stopped the reservation later. After LJP had taken up the matter with the State Government, the latter’s reply was that it had not received the approved list of OBC from the Centre. However, till 2004, the OBC list of Assam was taken into consideration by the deputy commissioners in Meghalaya.

LJP State president RG Pradhan said in a statement issued here on Thursday that in reply to a query by National Commission of Backward Classes on the issue, the social welfare department had maintained that there was no notified list of OBCs in the state. However, Pradhan wondered as to how the State Government has been issuing OBC certificates till 2004.
