NEW DELHI, June 6: Newly-elected Congress MP from Tura, Saleng A Sangma accompanied by MPCC president and former Shillong MP Vincent H Pala, Congress Legislature Party leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh, and Congress working president Deborah Ch Marak met AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge here on Thursday.
They also met AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik.
The AICC leadership was appreciative of the fact that the Congress snatched victory from the NPP after nearly two-and-half decades in the Tura parliamentary constituency.
Kharge advised the state leaders including Pala to be prepared for the bye-election in Saleng’s assembly constituency (Gambegre) which will be held soon. A win in the bye-election is necessary for the Congress as it would cement the party’s hold as the main opposition party Meghalaya.
Saleng also went to the Parliament and completed the formalities required for a new MP before taking oath.
Voice of the People Party MP from Shillong, Ricky Andrew J Syngkon who defeated Pala, is yet to arrive in the national capital for the formalities.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India met President Droupadi Murmu and handed over a copy of the notification issued by the Election Commission of India, in terms of Section 73 of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951, containing the names of the members elected to the Lok Sabha. After this formality, the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers will take oath on Saturday after which the MPs will do the same in batches.
