TURA, June 6: Irked over the abject failure of the NPP-led MDA Government to act against illegal betel nut smuggling from Myanmar into Garo Hills, a betel nut farmer from North Garo Hills has threatened to rally fellow farmers from the region to vote against the NPP in the GHADC elections next year as well as the Assembly elections slated to be held in 2028.
Panseng B Marak from Bajengdoba, who is currently admitted in hospital for treatment, has vowed not to give up but to take up the matter with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma himself once he is discharged from hospital.
Marak urged the government to take steps to stop the illegal activity for the sake of the poor farmers from the region. He warned that it would face a similar fate as the just concluded Lok Sabha elections if it continues to ignore the pleas of the farmers.
