SHILLONG, June 6: An elderly resident of Umden in Ri-Bhoi district sat on a hunger strike outside the main gates of the Secretariat demanding the construction of the Nongpoh- Umden- Sonapur road.
“I, Bindas Syiem have come to demand the Nongpoh- Umden- Sonapur road for the people and until such time the state government gives the road I will stay hungry till I die in front of the Secretariat,” read a poster she was displaying.
She was removed to the CTO parking lot where she is lodged under a temporary canopy surrounded by a few people who extended their support to her cause.
Syiem lamented that elected representatives have made promises galore but the road has been deteriorating over time. She said it was her right to demand better roads from the government.
She said she had met the Ri-Bhoi deputy commissioner and the Executive Engineer of PWD (Roads), but to no avail.
Asked if she would meet Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong, she said it was not her duty to do so.
She asserted that she would continue her hunger strike until the government promises to improve the road.
