SHILLONG, June 6: Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal has defended the frequent power cuts and shutdowns in the state saying this is being done to facilitate repair of the power lines which were damaged when tropical cyclone “Remal” hit the state.
Mondal said some areas have faulty connection and to repair those, the MeECL is forced to go for shutdowns.
He downplayed apprehensions of load-shedding, saying that MeECL workers work on erection of new poles, repair of transmission lines and strengthening of sub stations during the power cuts.
The MeECL suffered immense damage in the recent cyclone and the corporation is currently assessing the damages, he said.
Mondal said Meghalaya is in a very comfortable position vis-à-vis availability of power and the government is not going to resort to load-shedding for now.
Talking about the repair of the Umiam dam, he said the work would be completed by the end of July or the first week of August.
The government is now allowing vehicles to ply zig-zag on the bridge so that the work is expedited further.
