NEHU honours Pa Togan on death anniv

SHILLONG, June 7: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) commemorated the legacy of tribal hero Pa Togan Sangma, a revered figure in the freedom struggle, on his 151st death anniversary, during a programme on Friday.
The ceremony commenced with wreath-laying on Pa Togan Sangma’s portrait, symbolising respect and gratitude.
The highlight of the event was an engaging talk by Dr. Jacqueline R. Marak from the Department of Garo, NEHU, Tura campus.
Dr. Marak provided deep insights into Sangma’s life, emphasising the significant yet often overlooked contributions of the freedom fighters from Northeast India.
Recounting the courageous efforts of Pa Togan Sangma when the Garo Hills region was under the British Raj, she described him as a towering figure among the Garo tribe, leading his community in a direct confrontation with the British forces to safeguard their villages.
Prof. DK Nayak, the senior-most professor, stressed the importance of celebrating the lives of the ones who fought for the freedom of the country.
He stressed that such events serve as reminders for the younger generation about the sacrifices made by their ancestors.
The event concluded with a call to continue honoring these heroes to inspire future generations and foster patriotism.
