SHILLONG, June 8: The Power department has announced that there will be no load-shedding in Meghalaya this year, thanks to proactive planning and the arrival of monsoon rains. This news comes as a significant relief for residents who have endured long periods of load-shedding in previous years.
“We are in a comfortable position this year because we had already worked out (the plans). Now that the rains have also come in, it will definitely help us,” stated Power Minister AT Mondal.
Addressing concerns about power disruptions, Mondal clarified that many outages mistaken for load shedding are actually due to maintenance work. “People do not understand why power cuts are there. Majority of them think it is load-shedding when the current is not there,” he said. He outlined two primary reasons for power shutdowns — the absence of power necessitating load-shedding and scheduled maintenance work.
Mondal elaborated, “When rain comes, along with thunder and cyclones, it creates problems, and we have to go for scheduled and regular maintenance work. Trees get uprooted and fall on the lines, disrupting the current supply.”
He assured the public that the department is committed to resolving such disruptions promptly, ensuring that power outages are minimized and sorted out as quickly as possible.
