SHILLONG, June 8: The contractor tasked with constructing the proposed flyover at Rilbong junction, part of the Shillong-Dawki road project, has received instructions to proceed with a geo-technical survey. This flyover, if constructed, will be the first of its kind in Shillong.
The flyover is planned to extend from Mahavir Park in Jhalupara to just before the Anjalee petrol pump. Initially, the contractor believed that the government might extend the flyover to Barik Point. However, current directives focus on the stretch ending at Anjalee petrol pump, with soil testing and other preliminary assessments required for the project. The state government has already acquired the necessary land up to the Anjalee Petrol Pump and handed it over to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). The project, which must be completed within two years as per the agreement, does not yet have confirmation from NHIDCL headquarters regarding any extension to Barik Point, though Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are being developed.
Regarding the demolition of Anjalee petrol pump, an official explained that despite the flyover ending before the pump, it poses a traffic hazard for vehicles descending from the flyover, necessitating its removal.
This flyover will be constructed under the first phase of the Shillong-Dawki road project, which includes a four-lane road from Rilbong to Upper Shillong. The project aims to improve traffic flow and connectivity in the region, marking a significant infrastructure development for Shillong.
