SHILLONG, June 12: The Synjuk Ki Rangbah Kur-Ka Bri U Hynñiewtrep, accompanied by clan elders from Ri-Bhoi, gathered at the KHADC Conference Room to form the Ri-Bhoi unit of the Synjuk Rangbah Kur. The meeting was led by former legislator Rangkynsai Makdoh and RK Shadap, president of the Ri-Bhoi Dorbar.
The session began with vice president RL Kharpran and general secretary Aristotle Lyngdoh outlining the Synjuk’s fundamental objectives and aspirations. Delegates from Ri-Bhoi actively participated, highlighting issues within Khasi societal norms, especially concerning the matrilineal lineage system.
A major topic of discussion was the misuse of Khasi surnames and Scheduled Tribe certificates by non-tribal individuals through affidavits without proper scrutiny. The assembly also strongly opposed the customs of Ring Bia and Shaw Bhoi, which contradict the matrilineal principles of Khasi society. While these customs have historical significance in rare cases of family property custodianship, it was agreed that their practice should be confined to Ri-Bhoi clans and not extended to other regions.
The gathering concluded with a decision to convene another assembly in Nongpoh on July 20. This upcoming meeting will see the Ri-Bhoi unit of the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Kur-Ka Bri U Hynñiewtrep engage in further discussions to address these critical issues.
