SHILLONG, June 13: ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Tura, West Garo Hills, organised a three-day training programme on ‘Sustainable Dairy Farming Practices’ from June 11 to 13, at the KVK campus.
The initiative aimed to equip dairy farmers in West Garo Hills with the technological knowledge needed to boost milk production.
Despite the traditionally low consumption of milk among the tribal population in the Northeast region, there is a growing awareness of milk’s nutritional benefits.
This shift has opened new opportunities for dairy farming in the region. Recognising this potential, the training focused on providing the necessary technological support to enhance milk production.
A total of 17 participants attended the programme.
During the inaugural session, Dr Monica Sing, Head of KVK, highlighted the importance of fodder production to reduce feed costs and supply essential vitamins and minerals to cows, thereby increasing milk yield. Dr Tarun Kumar Das, Subject Matter Specialist (SMS), Agricultural Extension at KVK, discussed entrepreneurial opportunities in dairy farming, while Ramawater Yadav, SMS at KVK, encouraged the adoption of high-yield cattle breeds.
The programme also featured an inspirational talk by Baplu A Sangma, a dairy entrepreneur from Rombagre village, who was felicitated during the event.
Sangma shared his success story pertaining to dairy farming with the participants.
Dr Sagarika Borah, Senior Technical Officer (STO), Animal Science at KVK, led the technical sessions.
Participants engaged in practical demonstrations at the KVK’s Dairy Farm, Fodder Farm, and Azolla production unit.
Throughout the training, attendees received vitamins, mineral mixtures, medicines, azolla, and fodder planting materials.
