Fresh round of stir to hit State

SHILLONG: The consortium of 13 pro-ILP pressure groups has announced a thirty-six hour bandh from 5 am of December 10 till 5 pm on December 11 in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region of the State.

The purposed 36-hour bandh would not be effective in the five districts of Garo Hills districts.

However, the pressure groups have announced two nights of road blockade on December 10 and 11 to be effective from 8 pm till 5 am the next morning in Garo Hills region only.

Further, the pressure groups have also called a State-wide office picketing on December 13.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, FKJGP general secretary Wellbirth Rani said they (pressure groups) decided to call the bandh and the office picketing during their emergency meeting held on Sunday.

“We are intensifying our agitation since the Congress-led Government continues to remain adamant over our demand for implementation of ILP in the State,” Rani said.

Rani also said that the claims of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary (North East) Shambhu Singh that they have already written to the State Government that ILP cannot be implemented in the State is only an attempt to mislead the people.

“The Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act 1873 is very much applicable in Meghalaya,” he said.
