SHILLONG: After being decimated in four states in the just-concluded Assembly elections, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Deborah Marak has admitted that the verdict is not a good sign for Congress and the party needs to work harder.

Talking to reporters here on Monday, Marak said the main political rival BJP did the homework well and emerged a winner.

While accepting the verdict, she said that dismal result was a part and parcel of politics.

Reacting to a query, she said that overconfidence maybe one of the reasons for its poor performance but the party should learn from this debacle.

Except in Mizoram where Congress retained power, it lost in all the four states- New Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh.

She, however, felt that the another reason for the debacle of the country’s oldest party in four states was the overconfidence of the party as the Congress campaigned while the BJP did its homework perfectly.

“They (leaders at Delhi) should work very hard and find out the loopholes which led to this debacle for we have to correct ourselves before the big election,” she said.

The party now needs to revamp its policies and programmes before the upcoming Lok Sabha election, she said adding the party was not able to connect with masses.
