SHILLONG, June 20: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Executive Committee has ordered the removal of Bashemphang Thabah from his position as the Lyngdoh of Hima Sohiong. The directive, issued by the KHADC Deputy Secretary on June 14, follows an inquiry that found Thabah in violation of Section 6 of the United Khasi and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District (Appointment and Succession of Chief and Headmen) Act, 1959.
The decision comes after the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Khun Ki Hajar Hima Sohiong demanded Thabah’s removal, citing numerous violations and financial mismanagement. The JAC accused Thabah of selling Sanads to politically influential individuals, transferring control of Nongwah-Mawtamur to Hima Jirang without the consent of the Dorbar Hima Sohiong, and misusing substantial funds belonging to the Hima.
Thabah’s tenure has been controversial, with a history of allegations against him. In July 2019, the KHADC reinstated him as the full-fledged Lyngdoh of Hima Sohiong despite significant opposition. Prior to this, Thabah was suspended by the previous Executive Committee led by former Chief Executive Member (CEM) late HS Shylla on December 20, 2018.
The removal order marks a significant decision by the KHADC, aiming to address longstanding concerns about Thabah’s conduct and restore proper governance within Hima Sohiong.
