SHILLONG, June 22: Synod College on Friday hosted a memorial lecture to pay homage to the founding father of the Khasi Alphabet, Thomas Jones, here.
According to a statement here, the event was attended by Principal of John Roberts Theological College, Dr. BL Nongbri, Principal of Synod College, Dr. RM Lyngdoh, Vice Principal, Dr. M Rani, teaching and non-teaching staff and students.
The highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of a portrait of Thomas Jones, painted by a renowned local artist, Benedict Hynniewta.
During the event, Synod College principal offered deep insights into the life of Thomas Jones. This was followed by an opening prayer from the vice principal.
The highlight of the event was a special lecture titled ‘Revisiting the Legacy of Rev. Thomas Jones and Its Implications for the Khasi Jaintia Society: A Subaltern Perspective’, which was delivered by Dr. Nongbri.
“With an eye on hailing Thomas Jones as the prophet of social justice, his lecture was laden with grains of information that threw light on the multi-faceted personality of Thomas Jones. Interweaving the thematic strands of Thomas Jones’ priceless contributions to the Khasi-Jaintia community, he fleshed out the topic of economic empowerment and the essence of identity formation in connection to language,” the statement said.
