State to seek  4-month extension

HILLONG: The State Government will seek extension of four months from Supreme Court before deciding to close down CMJ University.

The Supreme Court lawyer Ranjan Mukherjee, who is dealing with the case on behalf of the State Government, said over phone from Delhi that after the State Government received several applications from the students of CMJ for their accommodation in other Universities, Government has decided to seek extension of four months before finally dissolving the University.

On September 13 this year, the Supreme Court in an order endorsed the stand of former Governor RS Mooshahary for dissolving the University and asked the State Government to give its action plan within three months after providing enough opportunity to the University to give its views.

The recommendation of Mooshahary to dissolve the University was as per Section 48 of the CMJ University Act, 2009.

The Section 48 of the CMJ University Act, 2009 says that “upon identification of mismanagement and mal-administration, the State Government would issue directions for rectification to the University and if the directions are not followed, the State Government can take steps to wind up the University”.

Since December 13 will be the culmination of three months, the State Government has decided to seek more time before finally dissolving the University.

The State Government had earlier said that it will soon dissolve the University following the order of the Supreme Court as well as the recommendation of the Regulatory Board which was entrusted to look into the anomalies of the private universities in the State.

Based on the Supreme Court order, the State Government had written to CMJ University for its views on dissolving the University.
