Rare white tiger has knee surgery in Japan

Tokyo: Vets in Japan have carried out knee surgery on a rare white tiger cub, fixing a leg problem the animal had been born with.
In what was being billed as the first such operation on an animal of its kind, surgeons fixed a congenitally displaced kneecap in its right hind leg.
The nine-month-old male, named Sky, was under the knife for five-and-a-half hours yesterday at the Nihon University animal hospital in Fujisawa, south of Tokyo, the school said on its website.
The animal was under general anaesthetic throughout the operation. The tiger, now weighing 56 kilogrammes (123 pounds), was born in March at Tobu Zoo in a northern suburb of Tokyo. A team of veterinary surgeons began the surgery by cutting open the knee and lifting the displaced patella.
“It was a very difficult operation but we managed to complete it without any problems,” said Kazuya Edamura, who led the operation.
“The bone and muscle there were more deformed than we expected. They were thicker and heavier, so we were forced to change the planned method of operation.” But, he added, Sky has youth on his side and will make a full recovery.
The white tiger is a rare variant of the Bengal tiger, born without the pigment that usually makes its fur orange. According to the website of the university’s College of Bio resource Sciences, there are about 300 white tigers in captivity in the world, including some 30 in Japan. (AFP)

Man arrested for ‘revenge porn’ website extortion

Los Angeles: US police arrested a 27-year-old man accused of running a “revenge porn” website hosting over 10,000 sexually explicit photos as part of an extortion ploy, officials said. Kevin Christopher Bollaert, 27, was arrested on Tuesday in San Diego and charged with 31 felony counts of conspiracy, identity theft and extortion over the racket, which allegedly made him tens of thousands of dollars.
“This website published intimate photos of unsuspecting victims and turned their public humiliation and betrayal into a commodity with the potential to devastate lives,” said California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris said.
Bollaert, who is being held in jail on USD 50,000 bail, allegedly created the website in December last year, allowing explicit photos to be posted without the subject’s permission. Such photos, commonly knows as revenge porn, are typically obtained consensually during a relationship but then posted without permission, or are simply stolen or hacked.
Unlike other revenge porn websites where photos are anonymous, the website required the poster to include the subject’s full name, location, age and Facebook profile link.
Bollaert created a second website, which he used when individuals contacted the website asking for their photos to be removed from the site.
He then allegedly extorted victims by offering, from the changemyreputation website, to remove content from the website for a fee of up to USD 350, allegedly making tens of thousands of dollars, according to court documents. “Online predators that profit from the extortion of private photos will be investigated and prosecuted for this reprehensible and illegal internet activity,” Harris said in a statement.
