SHILLONG: The steering committee formed by the non-Congress forces (NPP, BJP, KHNAM and UDP), to arrive on a decision to put up a consensus candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat, has decided to meet People’s Candidate Forum (PCF) candidature Rev. PBM Basaiawmoit.

“We have decided to meet Rev. Basaiawmoit to get an insight into his plan for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. So far, it is still not clear if he is going to contest,” steering committee general secretary Allantry F Dkhar said after a meeting of the committee on Wednesday. Dkhar also informed that the respective parties (NPP, BJP, KHNAM and UDP) would send their delegation to have a threadbare discussion with Rev. Basaiawmoit.

Dkhar informed that the committee had, earlier, met the members of the PCF to deliberate on the need for the non-Congress forces to put up a consensus candidate.

“The meeting, however, remained inconclusive since they did not arrive at any kind of agreement,” Dkhar said, adding that the PCF has now formally sent a letter to the committee seeking its support to Rev. Basaiawmoit.

Meanwhile, Dkhar pointed out that it would be difficult for the committee to support the PCF candidature since the PCF is a non-political force which has just come into existence.

“We would try to garner support for the candidate proposed by the UDP,” Dkhar said.

It may be noted that the UDP has proposed the name of its legislator Paul Lyngdoh to contest the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
