SHILLONG, June 29: Rich tributes were paid to the Father of Indian Statistics, Prof. PC Mahalanobis, during a programme to celebrate National Statistics Day here on Saturday.
The aforesaid programme was organised by the National Sample Survey Office (Field Operations Division), Regional Office Shillong, in collaboration with St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, at the college auditorium today.
Prof. SK Jha, HoD, Department of Statistics at North Eastern Hill University, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said the primary objective of National Statistics Day was to popularise and raise awareness about the importance of Statistics.
He explained that raw data is entropic in nature and becomes useful when organised into databases, facilitating easier summarisation and filtering.
He also provided examples of data collection and analysis, highlighting its significance in informed decision-making.
St. Anthony’s College principal, Dr. Arcadius Puwein, on the other hand, underscored the importance of data and lauded the NSSO’s role in data collection.
He also paid tribute to Prof. Mahalanobis, noting his profound impact on large-scale survey methodologies.
Director and Regional Head of NSSO (FOD) Regional Office Shillong, N. Mohondas Singh, detailed Prof. Mahalanobis’s contributions and stressed the importance of data-driven decision-making, which, he said, reduces risks and biases while fostering accountability and transparency.
On the occasion, a quiz competition, featuring students from various colleges in Shillong, was also held.
