SHILLONG, July 1: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on Monday called on Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and urged him to include the Nongpoh-Umden road in the top-priority list of the state government.
In a letter to the chief minister, Syiem said that the 20-km road project in question should be prioritised by the Planning department, so that the work on the same by the Centre is not delayed.
It may be mentioned that the construction project, which will be taken up under North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), will be funded by the DoNER Ministry for an estimated cost of Rs 52.98 crore.
Under the project, the road is proposed to be of intermediate lane and the items of work proposed include earthwork, subgrade, protection works, construction of CC drains and pipe culverts, pavements works and road safety, et al.
The proposed road project till Sonapur got all the attention after a woman from Ri-Bhoi staged a hunger strike in Shillong over the dilapidated condition of the road.
Meanwhile, Syiem, during the day, also held a meeting with the traditional leaders of Nongpoh and urged them to donate land to facilitate the construction of a medical college in the district.
