SHILLONG, July 7: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has acknowledged the difference in opinion amongst its members on the issue of breaking ties with the NPP and the MDA; however, the party is yet to discuss about it even as it maintained that so far there is no decision on pulling out of the coalition.
It is clear that the party leaders are divided on the issue but what is even more interesting is that despite this big development, the party is yet to convene a meeting to dwell on the issue and sort it out.
UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh admitted that the party had not held any specific discussion on this issue, but a general discussion was held to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses and the way forward.
“This debate is being expressed by leaders at different levels. The leadership, after considering all of these things, will decide,” he said, making it clear that party leaders may have varied opinions but it does not mean a break-up.
“We are not just talking about being in and out of the coalition but also on issues, policies and schemes,” he added.
It may be added here that the UDP top leadership is maintaining a stoic silence on reported internal murmurs that the party will pull out from the NPP-led ruling MDA coalition.
