SHILLONG, July 9: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has urged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to initiate an investigation into the alleged murder of one Niksamseng Ch Marak at the New Life Foundation Centre, a rehabilitation facility in Goalpara, Assam.
In a letter addressed to Himanta, Conrad detailed the events leading up to Marak’s death. Marak, a resident of Meghalaya, was arrested by Assam Police on July 2, and subsequently sent to the rehab centre.
Two days later, he was found dead under suspicious circumstances.
According to Sangma, the rehab centre initially claimed Marak’s death was a suicide, but later altered their statement, raising significant concerns.
The family reported severe injury marks on Marak’s body, including deep knife cuts, burns, and other severe injuries on his face, chin, hips, and legs, suggesting brutal torture and assault.
Sangma has requested an immediate investigation into the incident to ensure justice for Marak’s family, who have already lodged an FIR. He emphasised the need for a thorough inquiry to uncover the truth behind Marak’s death.
Additionally, Sangma praised the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF) for advocating on behalf of the community and taking up this critical cause.
