Guwahati, July 11: The flood situation in Assam has improved marginally on Thursday even as 2545 villages across 26 districts of the state remain affected, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) informed.
However, no flood-related deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours, even as a population close to 14 lakh remain affected by the deluge.
The overall flood-related death toll across two waves of floods in the state stands at 83, ASDMA sources confirmed on Thursday.
The affected districts include Cachar, Barpeta, Kamrup, Nagaon, Dhubri, Biswanath, Golaghat, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Morigaon, Tinsukia, Nalbari, Dhemaji, South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Karimganj, Charaideo, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Darrang, Jorhat, Kamrup (Metro), Majuli and Chirang.
According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) bulletin, the Brahmaputra at Nimatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri; Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang); Disang at Nanglamuraghat and the Kushiyara at Karimganj were flowing above danger level on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, the death toll of animals at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve has gone up to 174 (158 of them due to drowning) even as 116 animals have been treated and released in the park.
On the other hand, 46 of the 233 camps of the park remain inundated (up to five feet) as on Wednesday evening, an official report said.
“We have analysed data, and this year has been the highest flood level (as per CWC data) in the past 10 years,” field director of Kaziranga National Park, Sonali Ghosh informed the media.
According to CWC data, the Brahmaputra water level at Nimatighat (Jorhat) was recorded at 87.47 metres on July 1, 2024 (the date of high flood).
