Allegation of politician-militant nexus in State

SHILLONG: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has sought an independent probe into the allegation of nexus between some Congress politicians and insurgents operating in Garo Hills.
UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh on Sunday said that the Opposition-led Meghalaya People’s Forum had demanded a thorough probe into the matter vide a memorandum submitted to the Governor recently.
According to Lyngdoh, “The Governor appears to have taken the matter seriously and we are waiting for a positive feedback from him.”
Elaborating on the politician-militant nexus, Lyngdoh said, “It is an open secret, many people know about it. For instance, the toll gates in Garo Hills have been used to further the cause of insurgency. There is a revenue sharing formula from the gates and truth will come out only if there is a deeper inquiry into the issue rather doing a cosmetic probe,” Lyngdoh said.
The UDP leader also stated that the general feeling among the Opposition members is that the proposed probe should be carried out by an independent agency and not by any Government machinery.
Lyngdoh said that considering the current law and order problems involving various insurgent groups, an independent probe should be constituted immediately.
“If the current trend is not checked, Meghalaya might go the Manipur way,” Lyngdoh said.
