Shillong, July 16: After several KSU members were summoned for their ongoing drive to check the work permits of the migrant workers, the state police on Tuesday summoned members of the FKJGP for their recent drive to check trading licenses in Demseiniong and Nongmensong area.

FKJGP chief organiser, Khrawkupar Nongsiej was among the members of the Federation who were summoned to the Nongmensong police outpost.

Annoyed by the action of the police, FKJGP president, Dundee Cliff Khongsit said that it looks like the police are not respecting other government agencies since they (FKJGP)  had carried out the checking of  trading licenses in the presence of the officials from Labour Department, Commissionerate of Food and Safety and KHADC.

“We have not bypassed the concern authorities before going ahead with the checking of the trading licenses. We did not expect the police and government to harass the members of the Federation since our effort is to check illegal immigrants who are operating their business without the trading licenses,” Khongsit said.

The FKJGP president said that they are not against the migrant workers from outside the State.

According to him, they are free to come and work in the state provided they have the mandatory work permit from the Labour Department and other relevant documents for their identify proof.

He further pointed out that the State has implemented the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act, 1979 since 2011 which make mandatory for the migrant workers to obtain the work permit.

The FKJGP president also revealed that they would continue with the drive to check the work permit of the migrant workers in the different districts.

Khongsit said that they wouldn’t remain a mute spectator if the state government fails to deal very strongly against the migrant workers who has not obtained the work permit.

“We have to do something before it is too late,” FKJGP president added.
