NONGPOH, July 17: Following scores of complaints against autorickshaw drivers in Nongpoh, the traffic police of Nongpoh Police Station, in collaboration with the Nongpoh Region Auto Owners and Drivers Association, Nongpoh Unit, conducted an inspection of autorickshaw taxis on Monday in the area.
Association president, F Lyngdoh, informed that the Nongpoh unit had long urged the association’s central leadership to enhance the welfare of autorickshaw drivers and ensure passenger safety. However, he lamented the leadership’s inactivity over the years.
Lyngdoh said public complaints against autorickshaw drivers include reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, driving without licenses, underage drivers, and even instances of some drivers being involved in kidnapping incidents.
Lyngdoh emphasised that the inspection aimed to ensure public safety and improve relationships among drivers, not to create conflict.
Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector JK Phawa of the Nongpoh traffic police said the crackdown also aimed to raise public awareness about the necessity of proper licenses, documentation and helmet use for two-wheeler riders.
He noted that non-compliance often results in accidents and other incidents.
According to the official, many autorickshaw drivers were found without proper licenses and documentation, and numerous two-wheeler riders were found not wearing helmets, leading the police to issue fines as a warning to prevent future violations.
