SHILLONG, July 17: The Meghalaya BJP has demanded national recognition for legendary Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem and has asked the central government to unveil his portrait in the halls of Parliament.
The party requested the Postal department to release a stamp commemorating the martyrdom of the freedom fighter and also urged the Education Ministry to include his story in history textbooks so that his sacrifice inspires coming generations in the state and across the nation.
The demands were raised at a commemoration programme held at the party headquarters in Shillong, to mark the 189th death anniversary of the Khasi chieftain. Floral tributes were paid at U Tirot Sing Syiem’s statue on the State Central Library premises.
