Smit witch-hunting case

SHILLONG: The family members of the three persons lynched by a mob in Smit accusing them as menaiksuid or witchcraft on Tuesday said that they would not forget the gruesome murder against their own family members.

Three people, 70-year-old Yesly Mawthoh, 65-year-old Besly Mawthoh and Entarsing Nongdhar were bludgeoned to death by a mob in Smit accusing them of witchcraft.

“The scars of gruesome murder of our very own would remain with us forever. We would not forgive the perpetrators who committed the crime,” one of the family member of three deceased Aiborlang Khongjee told reporters while addressing newsmen here on Tuesday.

While expressing happiness over the investigation, Aiborlang said that they want justice at all cost.

“I want the law to take further course because we cannot accept the brutal killing of my father, uncle and brother simply on unfounded allegations,” Aiborlang said, adding that the family wants justice at all cost.

The Nongdhar family also bemoaned that the last rites of their family members could not be carried out in their own village.

Notably, the magisterial probe into the incident has come down heavily on a village council and recommended strong action against it. At the same time, the probe recommended that three persons– Risuklin Nongrum of Nongmadan Smit, Barisha Nongrum of Nongmadan Smit, and Rajesswell Nongrum-be charged with “culpable homicide” leading to the murder of the trio. It also pointed out that the three persons should be charged under Section 299 IPC and other related sections of the law.
