SHILLONG, July 24: Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan has announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 and assured his support to the two minor tribal girls belonging to the Koch community, who were sexually assault recently in Ampati, South West Garo Hills District.
The governor assured his support during a meeting with a delegation, led by former MLA KC Boro at Raj Bhavan, Shillong.
During the meeting, Boro briefed the governor about the heinous incident that took place on April 16, 2024.
Accompanied by members of the Meghalaya Koch Women Welfare Association, Boro expressed concern over the incident and submitted a memorandum to the governor.
The victims have demanded compensation of 10 lakh rupees, the maximum amount allowed under the Victim Compensation Scheme 2022.
After listening to the grievances, Chauhan assured them of commitment to justice for the victims.
He also announced an immediate financial assistance of Rs 50,000.
During the meeting, broader issues affecting the aggrieved communities of the region were also discussed.
The governor emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and children, and reiterated the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
He assured the delegation that the matter would be taken up with the relevant authorities for immediate action.
