SHILLONG, Aug 1: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday called for special reservations for local indigenous students of Meghalaya in the MD (HOM) courses at the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homeopathy (NEIAH).
In a letter to NEIAH Director, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem emphasised the need for reserved seats for local indigenous youths starting from the 2024 session. He highlighted that NEIAH initiated the MD (HOM) courses in 2023 with a total of eight seats distributed across different subjects.
Of these, four seats are allocated to the ‘All India Quota’, while the remaining four seats fall under the ‘Open North East Category’. Specifically, two seats are reserved for NEIAH BHMS graduates, and two are for students possessing a North Eastern Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC).
Synrem pointed out the lack of specific reservations for local indigenous youths of Meghalaya, contrasting it with the existing reservation policies for BAMS and BHMS courses. He urged the institute to recognise its location within the tribal area of Meghalaya and its mission to serve the region’s people, particularly those of the state.
“We hope and urge you, as the Head of the Institute, to consider our just and reasonable demands for the welfare of our youths and the State as a whole. We anticipate a positive response,” Synrem concluded.
