Guwahati: All Assam Students Union (AASU) took out a torch-light procession in Guwahati city on Saturday evening protesting the failure of Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government to improve the law and order situation that has taken a plunge for worse during the last few months all over the State.
A torch light procession comprising over three hundred AASU members and also some members of the public took al long route in the heart of the city this evening demanding urgent steps from the State government to arrest further deterioration of the law and order situation in the State where extortions, abductions and subversive activities have become order of the day even though the government has persuaded a number of militant groups to negotiation table in the state over the last few years including a larger faction of the ULFA and two factions of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).
The ULFA (Independent) or the anti-talks faction has been on an extortion spree in eastern Assam’s tea and industrial belt while a faction of the NDFB led by one Sangbijit has made life difficult for people in Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District Council (BTC) area through abduction and extortions.
The NDFB faction has not even spared small time traders and teachers while demanding money.
Assam government has assigned its Inspector General of Police (IGP), law and order, S N Singh to personally supervise operations in BTC areas to tame the NDFB faction.
However, killing to two students in an alleged fake encounter in Chirang district of the BTC on December 11 night has served a big blow to the intensified counter-insurgency operation against the NDFB faction.
The public protest and outcry against the killing of two teenaged students have forced the state government to institute a judicial probe besides a high-level official level probe.
While the protest against the fake encounter was yet to die down, death of a 14 year old girl in a bomb blast in Dibrugarh city in eastern Assam sparked another wave of protests against the government in the State.
