SHILLONG: Demand notes served to Government officials by the GNLA in Garo Hills is one of the main issues to be taken up by Education Minister during her official tour of the region.

“I have received reports that my officers had been receiving demand notes from the GNLA. I am going to Garo Hills to find out if this is true. If this is confirmed I am going to file an FIR against the GNLA,” Ampareen told reporters here on Tuesday.

She said majority of the Education department officers especially those who are supervising the various projects under SSA have been targeted by the GNLA. The outfit is also targeting officers of the Tourism department, of which she is holding the charge, she said.

“I believe my officers are afraid of coming out with information regarding the demand notes,” Ampareen said.

A subdivisional officer (Civil) in East Garo Hills district had also received an SMS from the GNLA demanding Rs 30 lakh. The district transport officer of the district as well as a block development officer have also been asked to part with Rs 40 lakh each by the group which has been on an extortion spree in Garo Hills of late.
