Govt offices record poor attendance
The 12-hour bandh called by proscribed HNLC on Monday failed to create much impact as most of the shops in Khyndailad (Police Bazaar), Laitumkhrah and other parts of the city remained open.
People defied the bandh as hundreds of people came out for their normal activities and last minute Christmas shopping
However, functioning of the government offices was badly affected due to thin attendance. Vehicles, both private and local taxis were also seen plying.
HNLC called for the 12 hour bandh demanding immediate and unconditional release of the pro ILP activists arrested by police in connection with several arsons and murder related case that took place during the three-month agitations.
The attendance in Government offices remained thin as very few employees turned up for their work on the last working day of the year.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal, however, claimed that the attendance was normal. In some offices staff had taken casual leave for Christmas preparations. He also said that the treasury office functioned normally.
The premiere financial institutions of the city also remained more or less non-functional as many branches of the banks shut down their shutters quite early.
