KHADC schedules spl session for Friday

SHILLONG, Aug 21: The KHADC has scheduled a special session for Friday in a move that will be expected to provide clarity on the reorganisation of the Council’s constituencies, reflecting the input and concerns of the affected communities. At the special session, the Select Committee of the KHADC is set to present its report on the recommendations for the readjustment of 29 council constituencies.
The Select Committee, formed by the Council, concluded its final meeting on Wednesday to review and resolve petitions submitted concerning the recommendations made by the delimitation committee. The committee was tasked with examining the report of the delimitation committee as well as the proposed ‘Delimitation of District Council Constituencies and Introduction of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Constitution of District Council) (Amendment) Rules, 2024,’ which had been presented by the Executive Committee in the July session.
“We have completed the task assigned to the committee. Now, we will table our report during the special session,” Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) and Chairman of the Council panel, Pynshngain N Syiem, told reporters after the meeting.
Syiem clarified that the report will not just include recommendations but also amendments to reorganise villages and localities within the different constituencies. The committee carefully considered the concerns and requests from various villages, localities, and groups that were reflected in the petitions. “I am confident that everyone will be satisfied, as the committee has made efforts to address the dissatisfaction and concerns regarding the delimitation committee’s recommendations,” said Syiem.
Earlier on Tuesday, Syiem stated that the panel would respect the voices of the people and traditional heads concerning the proposal to readjust the 29 existing constituencies. “We cannot go against the people,” he emphasised.
Syiem further noted that while some villages had petitioned to remain within their current constituencies rather than being moved to another post-delimitation, only a few had expressed a desire to be added to a new constituency. The committee heard many of the petitions on Tuesday, with the remaining being addressed on Wednesday.
“We will do our best to accommodate their views, but at the same time, we aim to ensure that the number of voters in each constituency is almost equal,” Syiem added.
