NONGPOH, Aug 22: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has maintained that switching political alliance in not uncommon given the dynamic nature of Meghalaya’s political landscape.
Reacting to the recent merger of the three Congress MLAs with the National People’s Party (NPP), Syiem, a former Congress legislator who now represents the United Democratic Party (UDP), said, “In a vibrant democracy, switching sides, switching allegiance from one political party to another, this is not new in the circle of politics within our country and within the state.”
Asserting that he is no longer affiliated with the Congress and thus is not in a position to comment on the internal matters of the party, the Nongpoh MLA noted that Meghalaya has long been recognised for its coalition governments, and that the political shifts, such as the recent merger, have been a part of the state’s history since the 1970s.
He also refrained from making any direct remark on the actions of the three MLAs and extended his best wishes to them. “They are my friends, they are my colleagues, and we hope to see that in the days to come, they could do better for the people of the state at large,” he said.
