SHILLONG, Aug 23: The Meghalaya Police have debunked a viral message that has been doing rounds on social media, claiming that the police have launched a free travel scheme for women between 10 pm and 6 am.
The message, which has been widely shared, suggested that any woman, who is alone and unable to find a vehicle to return home during these hours, can contact the police helpline numbers (1091 and 7837018555) to request a vehicle to safely take her to her destination at no cost.
The misleading message further advises people to share the information with women in their lives, encouraging them to save the helpline numbers and use them in emergencies. It even mentions that women can send a blank message or a missed call to alert the police about their location.
However, the Meghalaya Police, through their official social media handle, clarified that no such scheme has been implemented.
They urged the public to refrain from spreading the false message and to rely on verified information shared directly by the police or other official channels.
