Migrant workers amendment bill tabled in House

SHILLONG, Aug 23: The state government on Friday introduced several amendments bills, key among them being the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
Labour Minister Shakliar Warjri introduced the bill that seeks to make the registration of migrant workers mandatory with provision for penalty in case of violation.
As per the amendment, a contractor who fails to gets migrant workers registered with the competent authority will be served a notice to get the workers registered within seven days. Failure to do so will result in penalty ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs one lakh.
Additionally, the amendment also includes the provision for simple imprisonment of three months for repeat offenders.
Among other bills, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar introduced the Meghalaya Town and Country Planning (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
Housing Minister Marcuise Marak introduced the Meghalaya State Housing Board (Repealing) Bill, 2024 while Taxation Minister AT Mondal introduced the Goods and Services (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
Agriculture Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh introduced the Meghalaya Farmers (Empowerment) Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
