Delimitation of KHADC constituencies opposed

SHILLONG: At least seven KHADC members including four KHNAM MDCs have moved Governor Dr KK Paul opposing ongoing delimitation of the council constituencies being done as per the recommendation of the Delimitation Committee.
Of the seven MDCs, three submitted a petition to the Governor in this regard. They are Nongkrem Congress MDC Lambor Malngiang, Pariong Congress MDC Kong Irin Lyngdoh, Mylliem MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew.
Four KHNAM MDCs who had submitted a separate petition are Adelbert Nongrum (Jaiaw), Bah Ban James Basaiawmoit (Mawkhar), Latiplang Kharkongor (Nongthymmai) and Carmel Sohtun (Laitkroh).
The District Council Affairs department has submitted the proposed delimitation Bills of both the KHADC and JHADC to Dr Paul for his assent.
“The Governor is taking his time to take the final call after seeing the opposition from a section of the MDCs,” sources said.
The seven MDCs are opposing the delimitation process on the ground that the whole exercise was done hurriedly, sources said.
Sources said that the MDCs were also unhappy that the voice of those who opposed the proposed delimitation was not given any due importance.
Earlier, District Council Affairs Minister HDR Lyngdoh had said that if the Governor gives his assent to the proposed delimitation Bills of two councils then Government would conduct the upcoming district council elections in the delimited constituencies.
