SHILLONG, Aug 29: The state government has spent around Rs 100 crore in the last five years for the plantation of saplings in Meghalaya.
Informing this in his reply to a question from VPP MLA from Mawryngkneng Heavingstone Kharpran, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said a total of 99,78,352 number of saplings have been planted across the state from 2020 till June 2024.
He added that out the total number of saplings planted, 73,76,735 of them survived.
The chief minister also informed that the plantation has been done in approximately 1.19 lakh hectares.
Maintaining that 75 per cent is not a bad survival rate when it came to the plantation of saplings, the chief minister said that the government has been making efforts to get the community involved for better plantation survival results.
Conrad also said that the government is in the process of incentivising such communities to increase the sapling survival rate to 100 per cent.
According to the chief minister, there has been regular monitoring of the saplings on periodical basis.
