SHILLONG, Aug 29: The state government is set to launch four new development projects in the Mawphlang constituency, with two of these projects being funded under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and the other two under state schemes. This announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, during the question hour in the Assembly on Thursday.
Tynsong revealed that the two PMGSY projects aim to enhance rural road connectivity, in line with the central government’s flagship program. The remaining projects, to be funded by state schemes, are also focused on improving infrastructure within the constituency.
In response to a query from Mawphlang MLA Matthew B. Kurbah, Tynsong addressed the ongoing issue of traffic congestion in Mawngap. He assured the Assembly that the department plans to upgrade the existing road to an intermediate lane to ease the traffic burden. However, he noted that land acquisition remains a significant challenge and called for cooperation from local landowners to ensure the project’s success.
Charles airs concern over roads in Nongthymmai
During the same session, Nongthymmai MLA Charles Pyngrope (TMC) raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of roads in his constituency. Pyngrope highlighted the irony that half of the cabinet members, including Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, reside in Nongthymmai, yet the roads remain in disrepair.
Pyngrope requested the state government to allocate Rs 5 crore for road reconstruction in Nongthymmai, emphasising the need for immediate action. He pointed out that other cabinet members, including Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Minister AL Hek, Food Civil & Supplies Minister Comingone Ymbon, and PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak, also live in the area.
In response, Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong assured that the government is actively preparing estimates for road repairs in Shillong, including Nongthymmai. “I had already instructed the engineers to go for estimates as far as the improvement of Shillong roads is concerned. Estimates are being prepared, and once they are submitted, we will take up the necessary sanction and implement the repair work accordingly,” Tynsong stated.
He added that the government aims to ensure that all-weather roads are maintained in good condition and has directed engineers to prioritize the improvement and repair of roads in the area.
