SHILLONG, Aug 31: Despite rising complaints from various quarters, including politicians, about the alleged poor implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Meghalaya, the government has revealed that a total of 5,23,600 households across the state have been provided regular water supply under the scheme.
According to government data, out of 5,23,600 households, 15,700 are in East Jaintia Hills, 81,145 in West Garo Hills, 43,116 in West Jaintia Hills, 1,08,120 in East Khasi Hills, 17,688 in South West Khasi Hills, 52,776 in Ri-Bhoi, 34,696 in North Garo Hills, 30,403 in West Khasi Hills, 26,843 in Eastern West Khasi Hills, 42,819 in South West Garo Hills, 36,115 in East Garo Hills, and 34,179 in South Garo Hills.
The government data stated that these households are receiving the JJM benchmark of 55 litres of water per day.
Households listed under the JJM scheme, which have not received regular tap-water supply after the scheme’s completion, can now directly report their grievances to the department.
It is worth noting that the state BJP has consistently alleged poor execution of the JJM project in Meghalaya, citing instances where project completion signboards were erected despite the lack of water supply.
Social activists have also criticised the project, alleging improper implementation, including the use of plastic pipes and tap fittings without water in the tanks or sources.
