2 probationary police officers face termination of service over attempted rape of minor

TURA: The second officer in charge of Chandmari police beat house, who was arrested on Thursday for allegedly molesting a minor and attempting to rape her, has been placed under immediate suspension by the West Garo Hills district police.
The accused cop, sub-inspector Bankerlang Kharshanoh was arrested along with two other probationary sub-inspectors on Thursday and he has subsequently been suspended from service after the 12-year-old girl and her uncle filed an FIR with the Tura police over the incident which took place on the night of December 28.
“We have suspended sub-inspector Kharshanoh from service with immediate effect and since the two probationary officers are from Shillong District Executive Force (DEF) we have forwarded their case to their respective unit,” West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kr Singh in formed The Shillong Times.
The two probationary sub-inspectors, Ronald Nongrum and Sylvester Chyne, were attached to Tura DEF for law and order duty as part of their probationary training when they allegedly committed the molestation on the minor girl.
Both could face termination of their service since they stand accused of a heinous crime against a minor during their probationary period.
The minor girl and her uncle were returning from their shop in Janga area of Wadanang at around 11 pm on December 28 when their auto rickshaw was stopped by the three police officials who were in a white police gypsy.
After accusing the uncle of being a militant they assaulted him and allegedly molested the niece inside the auto rickshaw. The man then shouted out for help and hearing the commotion public from the locality came out and demanded that the cops release the girl and the man.
Following the gathering of the public in the area the three police officers, who were allegedly in an inebriated condition, took the uncle and his niece to Chandmari police beat house.
The victims were reportedly made to sign some papers inside the beat house and taken for medical examination before being let off late in the night.
“We will ensure the investigation is completed at the earliest and a woman police officer in the rank of sub-inspector has been appointed to probe the incident,” Mukesh Singh said.
Meanwhile, the Garo Hills State Movement Committee and the Tura Government College Students’ Union have condemned the incident.

Tura student raped; culprit uploads nude pictures in social media

Imphal: A youth allegedly sedated his woman friend, raped her and took her nude pictures which he uploaded on a social networking site, police said on Friday.
Allam Rajak Makakmayum raped the Mainipuri girl, with whom he had a year-long friendship, after making her unconscious in a lodge at Tura (Meghalaya) in September 2012, police said, quoting the complainant.
Promising to marry her later, Allam left for Pune where he was a post-graduate student, they said.
The victim, a college student in Tura, returned home on a vacation in Thoubal district of Manipur and found her nude pictures in a social networking site on December 20 last year, they said.
Police is looking for the offender who also hails from Manipur. (PTI)
