SHILLONG: The CSWO has expressed surprise over granting bail to the Officer in Charge of Mawryngkneng police outpost, Ekwin Pala, who never appeared in court.
“The Mawryngkneng OC Ekwin Pala fainted before cops could ‘arrest’ him and he was admitted in ICU”, the CSWO president in a statement issued here on Saturday said.
Kharshiing wondered as to why the police had not challenged the bail and why they did not report about the weakness of prosecution to the Government.
She pointed out that police are taking their time in arresting influential people while they raid houses of common man on mere suspicion.
“The police are going slow on cases against influential people and the more strange was that the prosecution made no objections in the case of Pala while the others who were alleged to be involved in small crimes were locked up”, she said.
This is the trend in Meghalaya where big scamsters are spared and when it comes to common man committing small crimes, the police present them before the media and brief them.
The police also allow the media to take photographs of small time thieves, who have no one to back them up, she alleged.
According to Kharshiing, the police make arrests of suspects without strong evidence, but ignore cases which prima facie are so evident.  Many cases in court are lost due to help by police and only vindictive false cases are tried and charge sheeted, she said
The CSWO demanded that such double standards by police and the government pleaders should be stopped as people are losing faith.
