Siliguri: Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Subash Joshi on Saturday said his armed personnel would start guarding the Indo-Myanmar border shortly to replace the Assam Rifles.
Addressing reporters here, the DG said the 1624 Km Indo-Myanmar border would be the third front for the BSF after successfully guarding two sensitive fronts-India-Pakistan and Indo-Bangladesh borders.
BSF needs some 41 battalions to be raised to guard the Indo-Myanmar border spread across the northeast frontier of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur.
Answering a question, Joshi said they have intensified patrolling in Indo-Bangla border after recent happenings in the neighbouring country.
He also said they have reports that some 50 rebel camps of Indian militants have been set up in that country.
He, however, said for now they have very cordial relations with the Bangladesh Rifles and exchange fair amount of information regarding trespasses.
Joshi said almost 70 to 80 per cent of West Bengal’s border had been fenced and due to some logistic, the remaining part remained unwired.
However, with updated technology, the unfenced areas get proper vigilance like hand- held thermal and night vision cameras, he added.
Joshi also took salute from 335 women BSF recruits at the passing out parade at Salughara camp. Of the 335 recuruits, 137 are from Bengal, 72 from Bihar, 49 from Assam, 24 from Odihas and 53 from other states.
The DG said the BSF has been extensively recruiting women in the force. (UNI)
