SHILLONG: St Anthony’s College emerged winners with St Edmund’s HS School and St Edmund’s College being 1st and 2nd runners-up in the Dr MM Das Memorial Debate Competition organized by Zenith Jubelieth Club at its premises on Saturday.
The annual debate competition being organized since 1995 was participated by higher secondary school and undergraduate college students .The topic for this year’s competition was “Corruption is the single most unifying force in India” which was thrown to sixteen debaters, eight each in the treasury and opposition.
Speaking for the motion, a participant said that every individual knows what corruption is but no stringent action is taken against perpetrators of corruption in the country. The Lokpal bill is languishing in the country for the last 42 years since it was first introduced but is not yet passed though the country is in support of the bill.
Another participant in support of the motion said that if all the black money stashed abroad is brought back then petrol will be sold at Rs 18 / litre and an LPG cylinder would cost much lesser.
Another participant said that corruption is there because the commoners actually give it an opportunity.
On the other hand, speaking against the motion, a participant said that the motion itself is a pessimistic approach whereas there is a need to despise corruption. She was echoed by another debater who said that corruption is much more than prosecution. He said that it is actually the media which propagates such a motion because besides many industries now we have a corruption industry, too.
“Media says that India is biggest producer of milk, rice, wheat and in the same way it should have a positive approach towards corruption,” said the debater adding corruption cannot unite countrymen but individuals have to unite themselves.
The beast speaker was Priyanku Sharma (St Anthony’s College) and most humorous speaker award was Aparmita Das (St Edmund’s HS School).
